Enable multi-factor authentication on your Microsoft account
Turn on MFA (multi-factor authentication) on your Microsoft 365 account so that a stolen password alone cannot let an attacker in.
MFA stops over 99% of account-compromise attacks. If your IT admin has not already enforced it, you can enable it yourself.
Set up MFA with the Microsoft Authenticator app (recommended)
- On your PC, go to aka.ms/mfasetup and sign in with your work account.
- Select Add sign-in method → Authenticator app → Next.
- On your phone, install the Microsoft Authenticator app (iOS App Store or Google Play).
- In the app, tap + → Work or school account → Scan QR code.
- Scan the QR code shown on your PC screen → Next.
- Approve the test notification that appears on your phone → Next → Done.
Set up MFA with a phone number (backup)
- At aka.ms/mfasetup, select Add sign-in method → Phone.
- Enter your mobile number and choose Text me a code or Call me.
- Enter the code sent to your phone → Confirm.
What happens at sign-in
After entering your password, Microsoft will ask you to approve a push notification in the Authenticator app (or enter a code from a text message). Approving it completes the sign-in.
If you lose your phone
Call the help desk immediately: (972) 961-7711 Option 2. They can reset your MFA methods so you can access your account from a new device.
> Security tip: Never approve an MFA prompt you did not trigger yourself. An unexpected prompt means someone is trying your password — reject it and report it.
