Connect a second monitor to your laptop
Extend your desktop to a second screen for more workspace — covers HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C, and docking stations.
Published August 2, 2026
A second monitor can double your visible workspace. Most business laptops support at least one external display.
Check your ports
| Port on laptop | Cable needed | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| HDMI | HDMI → HDMI | Most common; supports up to 4K |
| DisplayPort / Mini DisplayPort | DP → DP or Mini-DP → DP | Higher refresh rates |
| USB-C / Thunderbolt | USB-C → DP/HDMI adapter or cable | Requires a DisplayAlt-mode port |
| Docking station | Laptop power/USB-C connector | Connects multiple monitors at once |
Connect and configure
- Plug the cable into the laptop and the monitor.
- Turn the monitor on — Windows detects it automatically.
- Press Windows + P to open the projection menu:
- Duplicate — same image on both screens.
- Extend — different content on each screen (recommended).
- Second screen only — use only the external monitor.
- To set which monitor is the main one: right-click the desktop → Display settings → drag the monitor boxes to match their physical layout → scroll down and tick Make this my main display.
Monitor shows "No signal"
- Try a different cable or port.
- Right-click desktop → Display settings → Detect to force Windows to look for new displays.
- Restart the laptop with the monitor already connected.
- Check that the monitor is set to the correct input source (HDMI 1, DP 1, etc.).
If you need a cable, dock, or adapter, submit a hardware request through the portal.
