Share documents in a Teams chat or channel so colleagues always work on the latest version — no email attachments needed.
Published August 2, 2026
Files shared in Teams are stored in SharePoint or OneDrive, so everyone edits the same copy in real time.
Share in a channel
- Open the channel and select the Files tab.
- Select Upload to add a file from your computer, or New to create one in place.
- Right-click the file and choose Copy link — paste the link in a channel message to notify the team.
- To set permissions, select the file → Open in SharePoint → Share → choose who can view or edit.
Share in a chat
- Open the chat and select the paperclip icon in the message bar.
- Choose Upload from my computer or Browse Teams and Channels to attach an existing Teams file.
- Send the message — the recipient gets a co-editing link automatically.
Tips
- Use @mention a file (type
@then the file name) to highlight it in a message. - Files tab shows the full version history — select the file → ... → Version history to restore an earlier copy.
- Do not use Download then email — edits to the downloaded copy will not sync back.
