KB-0081·Web Browsers

Clear your browser cache and cookies

When a website misbehaves for you but works for everyone else, clearing the cache usually fixes it — clear cookies too and you'll be signed out.

Published August 2, 2026Edge, Chrome, How To

Browsers keep local copies of site files ([[cache]]) to load pages faster.

When those copies go stale, a site can break just for you — half-loaded

pages, old content, buttons that do nothing. Clearing forces a fresh copy.

Clear it (Edge and Chrome — same shortcut)

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Delete.
  2. Set the time range to All time.
  3. Start with Cached images and files only — this fixes display problems

and signs you out of nothing.

  1. Select Clear now (Edge) / Clear data (Chrome), then reload the

problem site with Ctrl + F5.

  1. Still broken? Repeat with Cookies and other site data ticked as well.

Fair warning: clearing [[cookies]] signs you out of websites, so have

your passwords and sign-in methods ready before you do it.

The lighter first move

Before clearing everything, try the problem site in a private window — if it

works there, it confirms cache/cookies are the culprit, and you can clear

with confidence. (Private browsing is its own useful tool: KB-0089.)

What clearing does not do

It doesn't delete saved passwords or favorites (those are separate

checkboxes — leave them unticked), doesn't speed up a slow PC, and doesn't

need doing on a schedule. It's a targeted fix for misbehaving sites, not

maintenance.

If that didn't work

Try the site in another browser entirely — if it fails everywhere, the

problem is the site or the network, not your browser. Report it with the

site's address and what you see.
